Washington, D.C. – The world is on the brink of a fresh water crisis, with demand set to exceed supply by 40% by the end of the decade, according to a report by the Global Commission on the Economics of Water. The report calls for governments to stop subsidizing the overuse of water in agriculture, while mining and manufacturing industries to reduce their wasteful practices. According to the commission, nations must work together to manage water as a global common good. The report sets out seven key recommendations, including reshaping global governance of water resources, public-private partnerships to scale up investment in water management, and establishing “just water partnerships” to raise finance for water projects in developing and middle-income countries.
The UN water summit, which will take place on 22 March, will mark the first time in more than four decades that the UN has met to discuss water. The summit is intended to raise awareness of the crisis, encouraging policymakers to recognize its severity and take action. World leaders have been invited to attend the summit, but only a few are expected to attend, with most countries represented by ministers or high-ranking officials.
